Fractionating Columns
Fractionating columns are used to separate mixtures of liquids into their individual components based on their boiling points. The column is typically a long vertical tube packed with a material such as glass beads or metal plates, which provides a large surface area for the vaporized liquid mixture to condense and re-vaporize. As the mixture ascends the column, the temperature decreases, and the components with lower boiling points will vaporize and rise higher in the column. Eventually, each component will reach a point where its boiling point matches the temperature in the column, and it will condense and be collected as a separate fraction. This process is commonly used in oil refineries to separate crude oil into various fractions, such as gasoline, diesel fuel, and kerosene.
